Chevrolet Colorado vs Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Chevrolet trucks have always been the staple vehicle of a hard-working American citizen. The fastest-growing full-line brand of 2020 continues to build upon the success with the 2021 models of the Silverado and Colorado trucks.

Colorado is a highly capable midsize truck designed to fit every lifestyle, while the Silverado has remained the unmatched king of the full-size segment. Let's take a look at what sets the two apart, and some of the most prominent features.

Dimensions & Capabilities

In terms of size, Colorado is an imposing vehicle, but Silverado is in a league of its own. Bigger in just about every dimension, Silverado is also the most capable in terms of trailering and carrying cargo. This isn't to say that Colorado is not keeping up, with a stellar performance in the mid-size segment.

  • Up to 12,700 lbs of GCWR
  • Towing up to 7,700 lbs
  • Maximum payload of 1,550 lbs

  • Up to 19,100 lbs of GCWR
  • Towing up to 13,300 lbs
  • Maximum payload of 2,280 lbs

Colorado Cab Configurations

Colorado is available as an extended cab with a long box, or crew cab with either a short or long box. The room in the front remains unchanged between the three, but crew cabs offer considerably more space in the rear. In crew cab, long box configuration combines the large cargo area with the more interior room, with an increase in overall length by 12.2 inches for a total of 224.9 inches.

Silverado Cab Configurations

Silverado can be purchased in a crew cab with a short or standard bed, double cab with a standard bed, or regular cab with a long bed. Just like with Colorado, front row space stays the same, and the main differences are seen in the cargo and rear row space, as well as the overall width. The long bed has an impressive length of 98.1 inches, while the longest configuration is the crew cab with the standard bed, measuring 241.2 inches.

Chevrolet has delegated a lot of its workforce into designing the best engine options for its trucks. With Colorado, there are two petrol and one diesel engine to choose from. Because of the wider application, Silverado can be equipped with one of 4 petrol engines or 1 diesel variant

  • 2.5L 4-Cylinder Petrol, 200 Horsepower & 191 lb.-ft. Torque, Towing up to 3,500 lbs
  • 3.6L DOHC V6 Petrol, 308 Horsepower & 275 lb.-ft. Torque, Towing up to 7,000 lbs
  • Duramax 2.8L Turbo-Diesel, 181 Horsepower & 369 lb.-ft. Torque, Towing up to 7,700 lbs

  • Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel, 277 Horsepower & 460 lb.-ft. Torque, Towing up to 9,500 lbs
  • 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 Petrol, 420 Horsepower & 460 lb.-ft. Torque, Towing up to 13,300 lbs
  • 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 Petrol, 355 horsepower, 383 lb.-ft. Torque, Towing up to 11,100 lbs
  • 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 Petrol, 285 Horsepower & 305 lb.-ft. Torque, Towing up to 7,900 lbs
  • 2.7L Turbo Petrol, 310 Horsepower & 348 lb.-ft. Torque, Trailering up to 9,300 lbs

Colorado Performance

Colorado's engines manage to achieve excellent fuel economy of up to 19 MPG in the city and 25-28 MPG on the highway. Turbo-diesel Duramax has the least power but achieves the best fuel economy and towing capability. The two petrol engines have nearly identical fuel economy, but the larger 3.6L V6 can tow more and has more power.

Silverado Performance

In the Silverado, the Duramax 3.0L turbo-diesel and the 2.7L turbocharged petrol offer respectable power and great fuel economy, without sacrificing towing capability. Of the two V8s, the 6.2L EcoTec3 makes more sense as the strongest and most capable option. The 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 seems like the odd one out of the group, outperformed by the smaller, turbocharged options.

Trims & Equipment

Silverado and Colorado encapsulate the best Chevrolet has to offer in design and quality of construction, but also in technological innovations, luxury, and safety. The unique design of Colorado, especially with the appearance packages, is a proper vehicle for a lifestyle that requires a lot of practicality, without sacrificing fun. Colorado on the other hand can handle the largest and heaviest loads, but will also carry you in luxury and comfort.
