Electric vs. Hybrid

What's the Difference Between Hybrid and Electric Vehicles?

The automobile industry is constantly changing - for the better. As the years move on, many manufacturers are beginning to move toward hybrid and electric vehicles rather than typical combustion engines of the past. By doing this, drivers can enjoy savings on gas and help reduce their carbon footprints.

But you may be wondering: what's the difference between a hybrid vehicle and an electric vehicle? Their differences may be subtle from the outside, but these two types of vehicles have vast distinctions.

Hybrid Vehicles

When you take control of a hybrid vehicle, you will notice plenty of differences from conventional vehicles. Hybrid vehicles use at least one electric engine combined with a gasoline engine to operate the vehicle. By doing this, driving around town can be more fuel-efficient than a conventional vehicle. Hybrid vehicles typically recapture energy using a process known as "regenerative braking," which extracts energy from the parts braked to be reused later.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles are slightly different from regular hybrid vehicles. As the name suggests, plug-in hybrid vehicles can be plugged into an outlet, allowing the driver to charge the battery inside. This is because the battery inside a plug-in hybrid vehicle is typically much larger than that of a typical hybrid vehicle. When you charge up a plug-in hybrid vehicle's battery, you can even drive around town with all-electric power.

Electric Vehicles

With an electric vehicle, you can say goodbye to the gas pump entirely. Electric vehicles abandon gasoline and traditional combustion engines in favor of strong, efficient batteries. When you take control of an electric vehicle, such as the all-new 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV, you can enjoy an extended all-electric driving range and smooth, powerful torque. Charging your all-electric vehicle is simple, you can either charge at your home overnight or stop at one of thousands of electric charging stations across the country!
