AC problems can develop over time, and a lack of cold air in summer can make even a short trip hot and uncomfortable. Fortunately, our Chevy dealership can fix any AC problem for you. We’d like you to know some signs you need to visit us for air conditioning maintenance.
Wet Carpet
A wet front passenger carpet when it’s not raining is usually a sign of an AC problem, and more specifically, a blocked evaporator drain tube. During the air cooling process, the evaporator coil is responsible for removing moisture from the air so the now dry air can be chilled before it’s blown into your cabin. The water accumulates at the bottom of the evaporator case and drains out through a rubber drain tube.
Over time, dirt from the air or bacteria can block the drain tube, causing the evaporator case to fill up and eventually overflow. This casing is located behind the fireboard of the front passenger seat, so the water will leak onto the carpet. Our technicians will clean or replace the drainpipe, then clean the carpet with an antibacterial cleaning solution.
Compressor Issues
The compressor is a pump that forces air and refrigerant through the AC system. There are several stages in the chilling process, and the compressor switches on and off as it moves the water and air to each stage. A compressor is very tough and dependable, but age or damage can cause it to slow down or fail.
The AC system won’t work if the compressor fails. Fortunately, most compressor problems are quick to solve. A blown compressor fuse, for example, switches the compressor off until the fuse is replaced. A damaged compressor clutch, which switches the compressor on and off as needed, can also be replaced relatively quickly. If the compressor has worn out, we can install a new one, and the AC will deliver cold air again on demand.
Noisy AC
The only noise you should hear from a healthy AC is the sound of fast-moving cold air entering your cabin. Rattling, clunking, rustling, and other odd noises when the AC is working are all signs that something is wrong. Some noises, for example, rustling, are usually made by dirt, leaf particles, and other debris brought in with the air that accumulate in the AC ducts and move around as the air passes through.
Harsher metallic noises usually mean damage to part of the AC. A clunking sound could be due to damaged bearings, while rattling noises suggest one or more loose components in the AC. We’ll examine the AC and find and fix the problem.
